Volunteers keep PF/PCA going. Whether you are greeting guests, helping with special events, prepping for an exhibition, or leading tours of the facilities, volunteers are essential to our operations!

Our volunteers come from all walks of life, ranging from students to retirees. Day and evening opportunities are available year-round.

Internship

PCA School: Summer Teaching Assistant

Position Description: 
Assistants will support the classroom instructors in weeklong studio arts camps for students ranging in age from 4 to 18. Camps begin on June 13 and continue until August 26. Weekend hours are also available. This is an unpaid opportunity with the possibility of college internship credits through participating colleges and universities. 

PCA School: Ceramics Studio Intern

Position Description:

  • Reclaiming clay: availability of reclaimed clay is vital to our children’s programs and art camps. The ceramics intern will be primarily responsible for the tasks involved in this process.
  • Assist as needed with basic studio housekeeping duties including sweeping, mopping, laundry, and moving boxes. You will be trained in studio safety and storage.
  • Learn basic glazing process, waxing, dipping, pouring, and stirring of glazes prior to use by access members and instructors. The ceramics intern will also reconstitute underglazes in preparation for use in children’s programs or workshops.
  • After an assessment period, the ceramics intern may be given the responsibility of unloading electric kilns and placing the work on the appropriate shelves.
  • Special events/art fairs/Empty Bowls. Occasionally, the Ceramic Department may be called upon by the PF/PCA to participate in community events, including but not limited to demonstrations, sales, fundraisers, Empty Bowls and the Yart Sale. You will learn how to pack pots to travel, load in, and load out of various venues.

Exhibitions Intern

The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts is looking for students interested in exhibition preparation, art handling, and arts management. Exhibitions interns will have the opportunity to work closely with our Exhibitions staff, as well as exhibiting artists, including local and regional guilds and artists.
